Choosing the right finishing touches for your home is just like selecting the perfect accessories for a great outfit. Those little details can make all the difference in your home’s style, just as your choice of a bold necklace or chandelier earrings can turn the look of an ordinary little black dress into something spectacular. And, just as with the fashion you wear on your body, these fashion items for your home should make statements, not spectacles; after all, they’re enhancements, not distractions.
Personally, I want my home to reflect my individual style the way my clothing choices reflect my personality. But I am not a decorator any more than I’m a stylist. I often find it hard to choose the right pieces for my home, especially because I keep furnishings a lot longer than I keep dresses. I simply don’t want to pick the wrong thing and find it really doesn’t work in the space, or worse, feel “stuck” with a lamp when I find out six of my friends ordered the same thing from Pottery Barn. That’s almost as bad as showing up to a party wearing the same dress, and a lame one at that.
So my solution is simple: when I pick statement pieces for my home, I go with vintage, limited edition, and one-of-a-kind items. Karen is always surprising her Object Mythology fans with the most unique home décor items, and I’m no exception. My current fave: Mister Owl. How can anyone not like this guy? This vintage brass creation is a perfect combination of an on-trend, retro-style decorator item that’s not something you’ll find anywhere else, whether you shop at Ethan Allen or Target. Plus, he’s just so cute.
Of course, not everyone’s into owls. Or brass. Or retro. For those of you not digging the bird, I say, check out one of Karen’s more practical finds: vintage seltzer bottles. These 1930s and 40s Argentinean bottles aren’t replicas. These are gorgeous flea market finds all the way from Argentina.
Finally, it just wouldn’t be Object Mythology without one pick that includes some alpaca fiber, so for you alpaca fans, I say snuggle up on the couch with your Suri Alpaca Fur Pillow.
